Synergel® S Series
The Synergel S series belong to a family of anhydrous gels that are based on a variety of hydrocarbon solvents. These hydrocarbon solvents are high-purity, low-odor aliphatic solvents composed primarily cycloparaffinic and isoparaffinic hydrocarbons and having a high solvent strength. All of the Synergel products are fluids at room temperature. Lower viscosity Synergel products may be described as thickened oils at room temperature. Higher viscosity Synergel products are viscoelastic at room temperature and temporarily increase in viscosity after they are sheared. Within hours after the shearing is stopped the polymers relax and the viscosity returns to the original equilibrium viscosity.
· Neat delivery package · Excellent suspension properties · Outstanding solvency · Remarkable adherence to a vertical surface · Water-white appearance · Low toxicity
Rheological Properties All Synergel products are thermally reversible. When heated, the gels will drop in viscosity; however, this is a reversible phenomenon and this cycle can continue almost indefinitely. Figures 1, 2 and 3 show a viscosity-temperature profile for Synergel SA V50 and Synergel SE V50 as measured by a Brookfield Thermocel viscometer (RV-DVII) at 5 rpm with spindle S28.

Formulation Procedure There are four critical factors that impact the stability of finished products containing these gels:
► Mixing temperatures of 60-90°C, depending on the flash point of the Synergel product, are recommended. Although these gels are quite stable, they can be oxidized if they are exposed to excessive temperatures over an extended period of time. The product should be kept at elevated temperatures only long enough to accomplish mixing. When mixing small percentages of other ingredients (5% to 10%), the required mixing temperature may be lower.
► Explosion proof equipment, enclosed vessels, and/or nitrogen blanketing should be used if the gel is heated above its flash point. Although the Synergel products have high viscosities at ambient temperature, they become fairly fluid at elevated temperatures.
► Mixing time depends upon the batch size and percentage of gel added. In general, the blend is complete when no lumps are visible, the blend has a smooth texture, the blend does not separate once the mixing stops, and a consistent viscosity is obtained.
► The order of other chemicals added to the gels is important. Always add the ingredients with the least polarity first. If the gel needs to be diluted using the same solvent, then the solvent should be added first.
Table 1 contains recommended mixing temperatures, based on the Synergel products’ flash points.

Toxicity Synergel SA V50 is considered hazardous according to the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard, 29 CFR 1910.1200, as being combustible. The rest of the Synergel S products are not considered hazardous according to the aforementioned standard.
